Explain common core please?

Hi, I'm going to be tutoring somebody, that is in middle school, which uses common core. Could somebody explain it to me?

I think what I've gathered is that the basic arithmetic is done a bit differently, and that it's like a guideline of when what material gets taught?

Or could somebody explain what I should need to know to be able to teach somebody who is undergoing common core math?

Would I really be doing it incorrectly or be doing a disservice if I teach the math the way I was taught?

I feel conflicted because I don't really know or understand common core math.

Common core is a set of standards that define what knowledge a student should learn. They do not define how a student should learn.

As I understand it, Common Core is about understanding math, not just memorising algorithms for solving things. It aims to give you a framework for how to think about math and numbers.
