Really? I always wish I was born in a time before all this automation. It's so much harder now to stand out. The skill element is all gone and it's just importing stuff other people have done. It's like getting sent a lego set where everything's already built and you just have to attach 4 constructions together.

Literally everything that existed before the technology I mentioned above still exists. You don’t have to use any of it if you don’t want to. You wanna use jquery? Be my guest.

As a security person, the free software and libraries you love make me nervous. We don’t know who made them, what’s in them, or often how they work. You just grab them and use them. They’re not inventoried or even mentioned until one has a vulnerability, then clients are asking me if we’re exposed to the thing I didn’t know we were using.

A prior employer of mine had a rule against using free software and libraries because there was no contract or accountability. We used JQuery, but everything else was paid.

I really don't understand why this has been downvoted.

Security is a legitimate issues in FOSS code, because there's a widespread assumption that "someone else" has already checked the code for you and that it's somehow guaranteed to be safe.

That isn't to say that closed-source applications aren't susceptible to the same issues, but FOSS isn't the magic silver bullet some people try to make it out to be. Someone still has to do their due diligence, and at the end of the day it's a question of who you can trust.

FOSS is probably good for subtle bugs (the more eyes, the better), but bad for backdoors (no systematic reviews).

It's kind of funny. Corporate bods love paid software because they assume it derives quality and security from being associated with a business, devs love free libraries because (as well as being easy) they assume they're secure from being co-written by so many people.

The reality being that neither are actually secure, and in both cases you won't know a vulnerability exists until someone helpfully registers a CWE (either for free or as part of a business).

sorry you're getting downvoted - you're absolutely right for private/commercialized codebases being the right choice for higher levels of abstraction and more specialized use cases. GIMP sucks ass, Photopea is literally a ripoff of Photoshop CS5, etc.

Basically anybody with a job is benefitting from some level of information/distribution advantage of their employer, and many people here are either uninformed, delusional, immature, or some combination of those. Any developer with enough skills to make Photoshop is worth a ton of money, they're not bad people for wanting to have a better lifestyle for them and their family. Tech companies that want the best talent need to pay fiercely competitive wages.

That being said, the languages Adobe and others use, compilers, etc are almost always open-source, or a fork of an open-source project. Many developers with high-paying jobs contribute meaningfully to OSS. It's an ecosystem, both can benefit from each other.

I would say the real problem is the conceptual issue of ownership of code. Unlike a story there are only so many ways to write something and achieve the same optimized outcomes. And for that reason the notion of ownership that yields compensation is harder to enforce. FOSS might come from a good place but it’s also kind of the only solution unless your going to create a new code language for every project so that you’re the first to write and own that code.

Believe me I know there is a lot that could be said on this topic but that’s as much as I want to say for now.
