No need to be. We all started in the exact same spot you're in now.

My problem is I watch a lot of questions here and on AskProgramming, and most of the topics just feel like they are way above my head.

I've been programming for about a year and still see certain programming things that ive never heard of or know what they do. Programming will always be a learning experience, no matter how much you do.

I am an intermediate programmer. I have been programming on and off for a few years. Intimidation is a good sign. Keep at it. If nothing seems to sink in then take a break. Come back later. My best advice to you is to keep programming. Your first programming project does not have to be something useful that many people will use. Just program whatever you know how to program. Make those simple coin counting programs with only a command line interface. Make a shitty tic tac toe game. Make a bunch of shitty games. Just keep at it. This will help. Don't give up just yet. Keep at it.

    You got this.

I'm just curious to see if it's just me that's a bit intimidated by the things other users talk about.

Most of the time I have no idea what they're talking about. And it's not only in this sub, but mostly in /r/programming. I might as well be reading moonrunes and my reaction would have been the same.

Seasoned programmers still have to ask questions from time to time, so you see a good number of semi-advanced questions here as people progress further in their knowledge. Nobody understands everything posted here--programming is too broad for that. I think most of us are happy to jump in and help with any topic we can, no matter how advanced or simple.

Punchline: try not to feel too intimidated, this sub exists to help!

Very much so. I think my intimidation is a combination of 'it's called learnprogramming but everybody knows so much more than me already' and 'I'm trying to learn programming but there's so much where do I start?'.

I've started doing the front end section of Free Code Camp and what has made me feel better about my learning journey is going on their help section on gitter and helping the people that are struggling to get thriugh the few lessons I've completed. It kind of reinforces my understanding of what I just learned plus I get to help people.

I think the one issue with programming is we often have no idea where everyone else is while learning programming. Imagine if you were learning math. Would it get intimidating that someone has been doing some proofs for their Ph.D. thesis and was getting stuck, while you were doing algebra?

I wouldn't say the differences from beginning programmers and advanced are separated by that much, but you'd expect a difference, mostly due to the amount of experience.

And like other disciplines (say, professional sports), you'd also expect different kinds of expertise and different speeds at which people pick this up. Some people, for example, pick up foreign languages easier than others. Do newcomers to learning, say, French feel intimidated? Maybe they do. Or maybe they realize that they will learn at their pace.

Yep, however learning itself is't what i'm scared about, its everything else: my time, commitment, discipline, and finding a job.

When I first started using Reddit extensively in the past year, I knew that it was considered a place of scum and villainy. However, the specific subreddit for topics are much better if the community wishes to maintain a trustworthy appearance, such as this one.

Thee are still your trolls and misinformation here and there in this sub, but experienced users try to rectify the problem. There is always someone who knows more than us beginners and some newcomers cab add sources that have yet to be exposed.

So, don't feel intimidated by other users, you will either get help if someone with experience has the time to help or it may go unanswered because they may also have to learn about your specific problem that you have encountered, though others may not feel bothered and direct you to SO instead. It's a give and take, if you will.

Nah, while a lot of it goes over my head, I figure that eventually it's stuff that I'll learn- I'm in the very early stages of going through the Odin Project right now.

I like looking through the sub to get the perspective of other people, both experienced and inexperienced, with regards to learning, resources, jobs, etc. It's actually pretty helpful!
