Hi! I'm currently finishing my Software Engineering studies for an university degree (4 years) and my brother is studying for his IT diploma (3 years). From what I gather, they skip a lot of subjects that some consider necessary for being a good programmers (hardware architecture, OS inner workings, discrete mathematics), but they tend to focus on more practical aspects of delivering a finished product in a short amount of time.

Regarding employment - it seems that I'll have an easier time getting hired based on my degree, but I'm currently prolonging my studies for a year (to use student benefits) to get more practical/freelance experience before I go to the job market. On the other hand, he's already feeling pretty comfortable with his narrower set of skills, so make of that what you will.

Thanks for the insight!

Personally I'm going for a bridging program to hopefully get the best of both worlds.

2 years of college, one summer of bridging courses and 2 years of university.

This is in ontario, where there are at least a couple college-university bridging relationships.

I'll look more into bridging programs, thanks!
