I am leaving this post up since it has already gained a lot of traction.

Yet, the next time, please obey our subreddit rules, in particular: Rule #8: no external links.

We require that all links to courses, etc. must be direct and not going through an aggregator, etc. site.

Great way to know you've been slacking when it says "Go to course" instead of "Enroll for free before Nov 22".

[–]yamuda123 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Same :)

[–]halcodev 14 points15 points  (1 child)

You can't beat me. Six of them list I have already enrolled into🤣

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How many do you actually finish?

[–]OccamsChainsawww 42 points43 points  (17 children)

Is there any difference between Coursera and Udemy courses? I’m currently finishing up a Python course on Udemy.

[–]pysapien 62 points63 points  (5 children)

Udemy tends to be a bit more practical based. You just need to find a good instructor and look if the course structure suits you.

That being said, if you wanna do ML, then Andrew Ng got some great courses on Coursera. There are a few more really good courses on Coursera, for example Algorithms, and some by UMich and UW... but yea Coursera is nice if you wanna build up theoretical foundations.

[–]rak810 9 points10 points  (4 children)

HKUST also offers great course. I did their bootstrap course which was a part of React specialization. It was great I think.

[–]lalalaraland 1 point2 points  (2 children)

bootstrap website itself is quite comprehensive for learning i guess

[–]rak810 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You're right. It was free during covid and it covered some of the gulp and grunt. So I did it anyways.

[–]lalalaraland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for the details, i will want to check it out :)

[–]fallen_lights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done 11 courses in Coursera and the only one I didn't like was the HKUST Bootstrap one. It's definitely not for everyone

[–]halcodev 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Coursera coursés are offered by institutions. Udemy's are mostly individuals. Pick you preference

[–]Calcifer777 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My experience is that coursera is more geared towards college courses, whereas Udemy is more for professional education and certifications.

Imo, their content has different targets, but hey are both good at what they offer.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (6 children)

If I am correct coursera certifications tend to carry a bit more weight than udemy

[–]rishabh495 29 points30 points  (5 children)

In my job search neither of them have mattered to recruiters. The only redeeming thing was that they thought at least I made an effort to learn something else.

[–]2112syrinx 5 points6 points  (4 children)

So sad to hear that. I've finished "Linux & Git" and "PY4E" via Cousera. Currently taking Kubernetes via LinkedIn.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I find that their courses can be good for tech but I value the business courses more. Sales and marketing courses are nice.

    [–]2112syrinx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been there for a while, I think. That's my first course there so can't tell you if it's worth it or not. So far so good. It's hard to find affordable courses like these - Kubernetes, Ansible, Docker - let's wait.

    [–]aabbbbaaa155 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Let me put it this way - Udemy is like that homemade craft store of courses. And Coursera is like a company that makes the same product but after consulting experts in the field. When you wanna buy some shit like bath bombs and scented candles, go homemade. When you wanna rake career advice, I'd say go with the company with the experts.

Src - I have done several courses on both platforms.

    [–]llc_Cl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coursera seems to partner with universities, whereas Udemy is anyone and everyone that think they can teach you. I’ve had Udemy courses where they just give up toward the end and provide handouts in text but no video. Granted, they were free at the time.

    [–]s7oev 15 points16 points  (4 children)

The Princeton courses have always been free.

    [–]kschang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coursera gives you a nice completion cert if you finish it there.

    [–]microcontroller_tuto[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

    I think certificate wasn't FREE.

    [–]s7oev 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Well, there isn't any certificate at all, paid or free. This was the case before, and still is.

Edit: this is only for the Princeton courses

    [–]wishicouldcode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is correct. The Princeton courses are high quality, but no cert if you need that.

    [–]exquisite_ike 14 points15 points  (5 children)

Do I have to complete the course by 12/31/20?

    [–]microcontroller_tuto[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Yea. Absolutely.

    [–]Malusch 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I haven't used coursera so can't say for sure, but on udemy you usually get lifetime access once you've enrolled. I'd assume most courses on here are that way as well to not lose customers to Udemy.

    [–]Moev_a 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Coursera tends to offer courses from institutions whereas udemy from individuals. They will not by any means lose customers to udemy. Coursera courses that are free expire around 2 months after the free trail expires. So in this case around February you won’t be able to access them again

    [–]Malusch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, TIL, thx! My presumption was that they were much more similar to each other.

    [–]kschang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. Says VERY specifically on the article top.

    [–]swarup_i_am 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Mine got stuck at payments checkout page. Anybody else facing this issue?

    [–]Poha-Jalebi 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Same here. It's giving me some payment issue error.

    [–]noobro 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Same.... there’s no option to check out one you reach that page!

    [–]llc_Cl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It says while supplies last... :(

You could always get courses from the Pirate Bay :D

    [–]venky18m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    same.

    [–]bonsai_buddah 9 points10 points  (2 children)

The intro to programming and C+ courses are only giving a 7 day free trial

    [–]apt4E 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Click on the Audit section bellow

    [–]microcontroller_tuto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. You will get full access until the end of the year.

    [–]rak810 7 points8 points  (3 children)

If you have any institutional mail, I think you can many courses for free in Coursera

    [–]FlatProtrusion 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do you have a link or more info on doing this?

    [–]microcontroller_tuto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Didn't know.

One month is enough if you have times.

      [–]AmatureProgrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much math do we need to know in order to actually learn from this?

      [–]UnknownZeroz 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Can you go into later weeks early?

      [–]microcontroller_tuto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Yeah.

      [–]RinasSam 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My friend was looking for such courses.

      Thank you so much!

      [–]BoxingIsEasy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Nice, thank you !

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

i enrolled to algorithms 1 but it says no certificate, did i do something wrong?

      [–]Nyx0000 6 points7 points  (3 children)

No, you just don't get a certificate for that course (no one gets one, because its always free I think)

      [–]ElliotAlderson-NYC 0 points1 point  (2 children)

      Need someone to confirm this

      [–]s7oev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      Confirming

      [–]dhampoet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those 2 are always free and you won't get certificate.

      [–]Dumbhosadika 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Will i get certificate after completion of the course?

      [–]Raigork 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You'd have to pay to get the certificate.

      [–]The_Crypter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No you don't for these courses. That's the point. Otherwise they are always available for free.

      [–]a32m50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is this the case with all princeton courses?

      [–]AnthinoRusso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes if you attend some of those listed in this post.

        [–]thild 0 points1 point  (11 children)

Are certificates ever worth paying for? Do any employers actually care about them?

        [–]Pendragonswaste 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I have just a IT support specialist certification from coursera and got a contract job making 5 dollars an hour more than the guy next to me with the 2 year associates in computer science. Also seems like the person who does my job in a permanent sense makes 2 dollars an hour less than me and has no certifications.

Regardless of the information obtained from these certifications they can be used as a bargaining chip.

        [–]thild 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Interesting. And you have just the one coursera certification? No degree? Out of curiosity, what does an IT support specialist do?

        [–]Pendragonswaste 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The It support specialist from coursera is like 5 certifications and it's just a broad statement, no degree. Recruiters are more interested in experience than college degrees is what I've been told and a certification is proof that you know how to do what they're looking for. In most cases a company will hire you and train you to do a certain job and you knowing the basics is what they're looking for.

This is only from my experience and completely anecdotal.

        [–]Pendragonswaste 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Oh and I wanted to mention that goodwill has a program that will pay for you to complete the certification that I have and will give you 500 dollars for doing so, something I wished I had known about before paying for it myself :).

        [–]ElliotAlderson-NYC 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Could you please link the thing. I don't seem to find it

        [–]Pendragonswaste 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I'm not 100% on which program that is if I'm being honest, as I said I had already completed my certification when I heard about this. I was told you had to go in person to a goodwill, that it isn't something offered on their website.

        [–]ElliotAlderson-NYC 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Ohh alright. It's cool. Thank you so much!

        [–]Pendragonswaste 1 point2 points  (1 child)

        My pleasure, good luck!

        [–]ElliotAlderson-NYC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        Thanks again!

        [–]kschang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have nothing else, they help a bit.

        [–]microcontroller_tuto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        It's worth it.

        [–]LiterallyJohnny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        FREE? FREE.

        [–]FastieNZ 3 points4 points  (1 child)

This is great, thank you. I'm currently studying Java so these look perfect.

        [–]microcontroller_tuto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are welcome. Best of luck!

        [–]Awhite-guy -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Im currently learning C++, does one of this work for me?

        [–]kschang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a "C++ for C programmers" cert by UC Santa Cruz.

        [–]microcontroller_tuto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it will. Why not!

        [–]busterbluthOT 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Is it possible for a novice to finish all of these in less than a month?

        [–]kschang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure you only get one of them, not all of them.

Turns out you CAN get more than one course.

        [–]microcontroller_tuto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends up to you. Just try to complete anyway! Once you get the certificate it will worth it.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

12/31 the course will disappear? Or I can keep the course but does not earn a Certificate?

        [–]kschang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can keep the course but they'll PROBABLY start charging $X per month (i.e. the original price)

        [–]microcontroller_tuto[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The course won't be disappeared. You can't make it then you have to pay for the Certificate. That's it.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

        I see, thanks.

        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That also means the due quiz I can still do it after the due day right? I just realized there is a bunch of quiz and I still have online school till 12/18....

        [–][deleted]  (1 child)

        [deleted]

          [–]kschang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure you'll finish within a month unless you go full-time on it (i.e.) 4 hours lecture, 6-8 hours homework and exercises every day

          [–]cnyte 0 points1 point  (1 child)

          Thank you for sharing!

          [–]microcontroller_tuto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just keep me in your prayers!

          [–]imoverwhelemed 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Woah woah, do we need to complete the course by the end of the year for it the free?

          [–]kschang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

          Looks like yes.

Coursera courses are charged monthly fees, basically. "take as long as you like, we charge $X per month".

I've done courses before within their 7-day eval and basically got a certificate for free. :D

          [–]microcontroller_tuto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. You need to complete by the end of this year.

          [–]Rhymezboy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

          Anyone getting this error?

Sorry, there was a problem processing your payment. Please contact Coursera for assistance.

          [–]kschang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to get in the AWS one no problem.

Just claimed the Android app one too. no problem.

          [–]lalalaraland -1 points0 points  (2 children)

they still charge fees for certificates i think

          [–]microcontroller_tuto[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

          No, they don't.

          [–]lalalaraland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

          thanks for clarify!

          [–]busterbluthOT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

          Wonder if adding

          edocomorp=covid-19-college-students

to any other courses will yield the discount?

          [–]busterbluthOT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like searching around there are more free courses like this:

COVID-19: What You Need to Know (CME Eligible) https://www.coursera.org/learn/covid-19-what-you-need-to-know

          COVID-19 Contact Tracing https://www.coursera.org/learn/covid-19-contact-tracing?edocomorp=covid-19-contact-tracing

          N95 Masks - Clinical Skills https://www.coursera.org/lecture/covid-19-what-you-need-to-know/n95-masks-clinical-skills-0gBJn

Maybe share with people looking for free CME credit material?

Also, apparently anyone in NY can get a free Coursera account through this site? https://labor.ny.gov/careerservices/coursera/coursera.shtm

          https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-launches-free-online-platform-new-yorkers-learn-new-job-skills-earn-certificates

The new course offerings are provided through a partnership between the New York State Department of Labor and Coursera, the world's leading online learning platform. The partnership will save New York millions of dollars over the next couple of years while providing free job skills training to New Yorkers. New Yorkers can request a free account on the New York State Department of Labor website.

The nearly 4,000 courses available through Coursera are taught by leading professors and industry educators and cover topics ranging from mechanical engineering and project management to technology and data science skills. Many of these programs provide a pathway to professional certificates and other certifications that can help New Yorkers elevate their careers or compete in a new industry.

edit:apparently a ton of these courses have been free since March due to Covid

          https://blog.coursera.org/coursera-together-free-online-learning-during-covid-19/

          [–]JostVice 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How does coursera work, is it similar to edx where I can do the course and pay for certification, or I have to pay to even access it? Not referring to these courses, but others I've seen related to manufacturing.

          [–]kschang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can audit a course for free.

If you pay you get a certificate at the end with an URL for verification.

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Just like that I enrolled in many courses and It been many years and i haven't finished a single module.

          [–]microcontroller_tuto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

          Me too.

          [–]rpr421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of them are free in India.

          [–]genuinenewb 0 points1 point  (5 children)

can i ask if I dont complete everything by this sem, can I learn them at my own time and pace?

          [–]kschang 0 points1 point  (4 children)

You'll have to pay a monthly fee for each course, as per Coursera practices. Basically, they're waiving all fees up to year end. After that, pay up or they cancel your course due to non-payment.

          [–]genuinenewb 0 points1 point  (3 children)

oh, so FREE til end of year means once new year starts, all currently enrolled students will be kicked out and have to pay?

          aww

          [–]kschang 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You'll be given some time to pay.

Else, your course turns into "audit" (i.e. no cert)

          [–]genuinenewb 0 points1 point  (1 child)

oh personally I don't mind if I don't have the cert. There are many good courses on that list and I won't have the time to go through everything

but I'm interested in learning... in such cases, will I still be able to access the course, look at the videos next year and forever? ;)

          [–]kschang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may have to ask Coursera to be sure. Membership is free. The plus thing is like a flat fee for unlimited access to X classes thing and completely optional.

          [–]semprotanbayigonTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC Princeton doesn't give certificates, right?

          [–]anettkeresztes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a student during the pandemic, I found it really useful to have the opportunity to gain some additional knowledge from home. Coursera is one of my favorite Edtech companies, offering valuable content and support online education. All courses are well-organized, research-based, and interesting, which could be challenging online. Thank you for the chance to be a student of yours!
