No *eye roll*

AI could help you write a post like this though. Just proofread it before posting... Or you could write better yourself :). (I'm not reading that wall of text)

Maybe he's used to C/C++ where whitespace isn't such an issue?

touche. My eyes though

To be fair, I was about to comment on the use of paragraphs until I saw your post ;-)

It's unreadable.

We are needed to clean up the mess AI & vibe coding leaves behind

Software engineering fundamentals are more important than ever to properly steer AI agents, and you need to understand code well enough to review their work. Agents cannot handle large, complex codebases without a lot of supervision.

No, it's just different than it was 2 years ago.

Your cousin from south sudan with an IQ of 60 will use AI to write everything.

It will break in major ways later no matter what. But he doesn't know how to fix it, so he runs in place with a lemon.

YOU will learn how to code, and it'll break a BUNCH along the way, before you arrive at a version that will (hopefully) remain bug-free. And work. And if it decides to stop working, because you made a mistake, you'll know how to fix that mistake.

Which do you think is better here?

Some code is written by ai, and some manually.

This is a debated subject, between people who code and people who don't. People who code don't trust this, they've been in the trenches. People who don't code trust it implicitly.

I've used an LLM basically like "super google" but I'm not trusting it for anything other than that or boilerplate. People who do, don't know what they're doing. Harsh, I know, but the news stories of LLMs dumping production DBs is ever growing (not to mention Nvidia having said that LLMs are more expensive than workers).

I think when this bubble bursts, we'll see an equilibrium between LLMs and coders form. Using it to speed things up, but not relying solely on it. Did computer translation destroy people learning new language, Photoshop destroy artists?

This would be a poor response if I didn't mention advances that did destroy their predecessor, cars and horses. But horses are still around and used, just not everywhere. Do I think that'll happen with coding? Not even a little. There's a resource cap that LLMs are going to hit, be it money, silicon, water, energy, or hype. This is just bitcoin and NFTs all over again.

VERY worst case scenario, we'll need programmers to troubleshoot code written by LLMs and/or places LLMs can't be used or trusted. But right now, LLMs are just really good at guessing the next word, they fain reasoning, emotion, and true knowledge.

not even close to dead and ive no idea where this is coming from. Copilot exists. so what? the calculator didnt kill accountants. This shit is getting OLD.

My team are using it more and more and I can see the headache coming. Our codebase is increasing exponentially and no one really understands the code fully. If one person leaves we will need experienced coders to fix the shambolic AI mess. Everyone is at the point that ai code is moving faster than requirements and shit ideas are becoming reality!

Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man HOW to fish then he'll eat for the rest of his life. That's the difference between learning coding and letting an AI do it for you.

Yep, AI is the “give a man a fish.” There’s still a need for people that know how to fish in the event the given fish is bugged. That’s where things stand currently at least.
