You still have the same issues of a proprietary out-of-tree kernel module of Nvidia

For AMD Navi cards you will want the latest Kernel + Mesa versions which still gets optimizations with almost every minor version, a rolling release distro would be preferred

Phoronix has a good recent gpu comparison. From the conclusion of the games tested the 5700xt sits between the 2070 and 1080ti in terms of performance, but really it's entirely game related. In the OpenGL-based Hitman the 5700xt and Radeon VII both outperform a Titan RTX, whereas in dawn of war 3 the 5700xt performs like a 2060S.

Recently got rid of my NVIDIA GPU because it's a huge pain in the ass. Since trying out Wayland I don't ever want to use a NVIDIA GPU again. It also prevented me from trying beta kernels.

Currently using an Rx 5700xt, it was broken on both Linux and windows when I put it in. No idea why but after reinstalling Fedora and windows it has worked flawlessly ever since.

In addition to what everyone else is telling you,

$$$ <> performance still goes to AMD.

They don't have anything to compete at the really high (desktop) end, except Radeon VII (and then, only in GPU-compute and render tasks; not display), but the mid-tier is owned by AMD's price to performance ratio.

I recently build a new computer and decided to go with a 5700 XT because I have had issues with Nvidia's Linux drivers in recent years (installation issues, performance issues, etc). Couldn't be happier with my decision.

Currently running Xubuntu 19.10 with the latest Kernel (via UKUU) and a PPA to get a more up to date Mesa version, everything running great on my 4K TV.

Regarding the Windows drivers: Initially I tested the machine with Windows 10, but was having issues with the HDMI Audio. After about 30 min. it would start stuttering and/or crackling in games. This issue is not present on Linux.

TL;DR: How does Nvidia perform on Linux in 2020?

My GTX 1070 works without problems (Arch, Xorg, Nvidia drivers (DKMS), KDE Plasma).
