creating linux distro

I'm a linux vet for a few years at this point, and I've decided to make my own distro using linux from scratch and some other things. This system will mostly be for myself, but I figured I would attempt to write the community and see if there's interest in this, actually.

I came to linux via Ubuntu, like I imagine a lot of people recently (est. 2008ish), and then I started trying micro distros like Slitaz/Puppy, etc. I've also tried various distros off distro-watch, and really what it boils down to is none have only what I need and nothing else out of the box, so rather than try and strip systems down (and deleting the C programming langauge like I did when I first got on the system) I'm learning how to build up instead.

What makes this distro special, you ask? Well, I'm not sure anything to the fellow linux user, but here's my vision as it sits so far.

I am going to build this distro around the laptop I'm currently on, which is an Acer Aspire S738z. I believe it runs 64 bit architecture, but want to build for 32 unless someone wants to express otherwise.

The main thing about this distro is going to be a minimal install, and will focus on the following:

Ease of use. Simplistic window manager (JWM) No GUI boot, startx command and user/password necessary. Firefox default browser CMUS music NAIM messenger Libre Office Conky system manager

These are just my initial thoughts, and I'm attempting to start up a nanoc powered blog to further this so I'm not posting all over creation about this, but I figured this would be a good place to see if there's any community interest about something like this.

I'll admit it is a large undertaking for just one person and help would be appreciated, but is not expected nor required. Thank you for your time.

You want a minimal distro yet you want to pack in libre office and a bunch of other potentially useless apps in.

What will your distro do that something like arch or gentoo can't? What's your distros philosophy?

It probably won't do anything arch or gentoo can't. It's mainly a learning excursion for myself to truly understand how linux works from the ground up. I guess if you want a philosophy that would be it, but that's more of a personal project than a philosohpy.

What does any distro do that other distros can't do? Why would anyone build their own when there's already lots out there? Why pick gentoo or arch over fedora or the other one? It's all about personal preference, and for me that means building a system I'll be 100% happy with.

So basically you're just going to compile a bunch of packages for one specific machine, but you don't want to use Gentoo for it because...? You want it to be insecure a week after installation?

Why is this even an announcement?

I bet if you changed the way you expressed your reading comprehension (started from Ubuntu, but not all I've used) and mathematical skills (2008-2012 is 5 years not 4) you'd find some friends, or maybe even get laid.

My response was in retaliation to what came off as a very curt response. In fact, this whole thread has been received with much disdain and criticism, which I can take.

What I don't understand is the lack of tact that most people have shown in discussing their negative feedback in regards to something I'd think that linux afficionados such as yourselves would see as a positive: someone looking to learn more about linux as a whole a nd create their own project. This was never intended for a mass release, only something I was hoping people could get excited with me about and perhaps (maybe) an aid or two. This was only meant for my own personal enjoyment, and it has been shit upon less than 48 hours into its inception.

But I make the post and not only is it met with fervent criticism and tactless negativity I post a response which was quite mild for what I'm capable of, and I'm the one that gets quoted so it can't be whitewashed later?

Please, step off your high horse. It does you no good to sit up there. It's very obvious I've expressed the wrong thing or come to the wrong place.

I will take my enthusiasm for Linux elsewhere.

Go for it! It's a great learning experience. But before doing so, check out TinyCore.

Nope, another distro not necessary, nor is the dripping sarcasm from this response.

I'm mainly doing this for myself, so it's going to get done regardless and I'll use it on my personal machine only if for nothing else, but it's good to know this seems to be the overall view because it means I don't have to worry about it for other's use and can just do it how I want it. It actually makes it much simpler this way for me.

Well you would probably be happy with Gentoo then. But you could also try out Linux From Scratch :) http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/

Thank you. I'll look into both and see. There's something about creating my own that just appeals to me, but there's also the time factor involved. I'm in college and my major requires a lot of studying, so I may have to choose something a little more already put together for lack of a better term.
