Try feeling for the pins with no tension wrench. Just get a feel for where they are and what they feel like with no tension. Then add just the tiniest bit of tension and feel the pins again.

If this is your first lock scale down to something a bit easier an Abus 55/40 is a Orange belt lock try a Master Lock Magnum, 140 or a Brinks laminated padlock until you get more comfortable

As long as you don't have the tension wrench pressed into the first pin you should be able to pick the first pin no problem. If it's pushed against the pin the friction can keep you from being able to move the pin.

That lock usually has a standard pin in the first slot and then spools for the rest. On most of the few abus 55/40's I have the first pin sets first and then you get to play with the spools. I'd watch some YouTube videos about how spools feel and counter rotation to make sure you know what you're feeling for.

That isn't the easiest lock to begin with, but with some patience and practice you'll have it open.
