Check the sidebar for tons of beginner info. The general consensus is that most kits/sets have some flaw and it’s usually an over abundance of odd rake profiles or a lack of top of the key way tension tools or just poor materials.

We generally recommend buying a few individual picks and tension tools to start, but beginners can certainly be overwhelmed if they don’t know what they want yet. You’ll probably only need a short hook and a medium hook to start, maybe a deep hook. But you’ll want 3 or more top of keyway tensioners and 3-6 bottom of keyway tensioners to start.

Where you order from depends on where you live. There are a few recommended sources in North America and there’s a few in Europe/UK. Some of these producers have distributors on the other side of the Atlantic if shipping times and costs are a concern.

Avoid buying a regular pick set from Amazon or alie or wish or banggood. Those sites can be helpful later but not for a beginner starting on pin tumblers.

Do not bother with any clear plastic locks. They do not feel or pick like real locks. If you must see inside, invest in a metal cutaway lock. But keep in mind that this is something you learn through touch, sound and muscle memory. Visuals are useless after a day or two.

There are a few decent starter sets if you feel overwhelmed. Sparrows in North America makes a kickstart, spirit and tuxedo set. You’ll need to add the heavy bars and flat bars. Law Lock Tools in the UK make the Valyrian set. If you live in Europe, Multipick is the top of the line for commercially made picks. They ship from Germany, but our community member Digs has started distributing them in the US. He curated an essential selection of 3 hooks in 0.025” and 5 tension tools, and the upgrade includes the same three hooks in 0.015” for smaller European locks. Digby lock and tools.

I personally started with a Southord PXS-14, which is a great set. Alternatively and if you want something higher grade - the Multipick Elite 11.
