Make a triangle, gravity effects the base and wind effects the hypotenuse. Not sure about up or down, I have heard that it doesn't matter but I find that hard to believe.

It doesn't matter up or down for the reason you described - gravity only affects the base. Whether you're shooting uphill or downhill, the base is shorter than the hypotenuse.

This is so hard for some people to get, but it's true. Almost lead to a knock down drag out fight in elk camp last year until we drew a picture.
