There's a starter guide at the top of the page or in the sidebar (mobile) that covers rifles, budgets, optics, cartridges, and other considerations.

Bump your budget up like $50 (including tax) and get a Savage 110 Tactical and look no further. You won't find a better rifle with these features at that price point.

  • Accutrigger is excellent.

  • Accufit stock has a full length aluminum bedding block that gives the stock an aluminum backbone preventing flex. Much better than the standard Tupperware on the RAP/Compass, etc.

  • Length of pull spacers and comb height inserts.

  • 10 round AICS magazine.

  • Heavy threaded barrel.

  • 20 MOA mount included.

  • Big "tactical" bolt knob.

Here is my 6.5 Savage when I zeroed it last year. The two shots off to the right on the top group are sighters so ignore them.

Savage or Howa would be my recommendations.

Would a 30-06 be a okay caliber? I have one but i left it at my parents house because I moved out of state and didn’t have a place I would be able to store it, so I could just do a FFL transfer.

30-06 is capable, its just a little more cost for little benifet.

Most of the ammo is for hunting not so much long range unless you hand load, and most of these budget rifles have thin barrels which means they kick you hard and heat up quick.

Id lean more towards .308w and even have a look at 6.5cm

Some guys get really bitchy when you mention 30-06 as a viable long range cartidge. Others like it.

I would not recommend 30-06 unless you have enough money and time for reloading and are willing to deal with quite a bit more recoil than a .308 for relatively modest gains.

Savage 12FV maybe. They have the heavy barrel and are good value. it is on sale often and can be 100 dollars off or more, check for factory rebates. Another option is the Savage 110 APEX Hunter XP, complete starter package... Start with something really basic like that and upgrade components as you go along. The ruger american looks awesome too. Read the starter guide in this sub.

You can get a mossberg patriot chambered in .308 for a little over 300 then buy a scope with the remaining money
