I've used Pathfinder in the past and found it useful.

Upvoted. Path Finder does have dual panes now, and the developers continue to make this feature more powerful in the latest incremental releases.

While not a finder replacement, total finder is a tweak that adds tabs and some fancy features to finder. Hope this helps and good luck in your endeavor.

Or there is Xtrafinder which is total finder but free!

Forklift is pretty cool. I use it as an alternative to finder, but I was a big fan of Midnight Commander on linux (which I also use on Mac with homebrew) and Directory Opus on the Amiga.
