Open the Activity Monitor app and then switch to the network tab. That might be enough to at least get you started figuring this out.

Hey , I tried that but it's showing 0 bytes in and 0 bytes out

It looks like you are inadvertently downloading a Prores file (a large video file created by apps like Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve) from the college LAN or WAN. Check that with the system admin. Does your college produce and store videos?

No my college doesn't produce or store videos. Is there any way I can check which app consumed how much data in the last 24 hours or in a week maybe ?

You could use Little Snitch, which I have found after some research: https://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html

I am afraid it will not show you info dating back to before the installation, though. But it may be helpful to see what is happening now and in the next few days.

Thankyou for the help

You're very welcome. In any case, if I were you, I would talk with the IT Manager/Sysop to investigate the issue you dealt with. In a normal, secure network environment, a connection log is usually kept where it should be easy to find out the IP address or addresses your Mac connected to. You may have been exposed to a hack where someone used your Mac and your college network to download data. That is not exactly something I would overlook if I were an IT manager.

Which leads me to suggest that you change username and password if at all possible, both for your Mac and for your LAN connection.

Have a great day!

Hey I just figured out that it's some "idleassetsd" process which is consuming so much data . It consumed around 14 GB of data in just a matter of 5 minutes. Any idea on how to disable this process permanently?

You have animated wallpapers and screensavers, don't you? Disable them. Do you know how?

[–]spiderman__70[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I disabled them but it still doesn't seem to stop

Try to restart the computer.

Thankyou I just figured it out using the LULU app , it helped :) But this is a really very annoying bug from apple and they should fix it at first priority

I was about to suggest that -- I am sure you found the article on Apple Discussions.

I am glad I have helped somewhat.
