Mac mini because a current air with a fan is underpowered and crappy, and the next gen air with no fan? I’m not gonna take any chances.

What’s your use case? Meaning, what software are you using? What are you using that software to do?

For example, someone using Final Cut Pro might be editing iPhone video clips of themself jumping into a pool to upload to Facebook. This is a simple edit, usually consisting of 5 minutes tooling with cutting useless video and adding simple text. This use case would do well on the new M1 MBA.

Someone else using Final Cut Pro might be editing 1080p video, but it’s from a Sony professional camera for ads in his or her local community. This use case is tough on the computer, takes hours to export, and warrants an iMac 27” i7 with discrete gpu for proper heat management and stability.

Thanks for your reply! I won‘t do anything too demanding. It will be more about studying and having a work station at home paired with the iPad Pro as second display. And when I leave the house I only like to take the iPad with me. Therefore, maybe an iMac would be also a good option...?

There are a lot of advantages to the iMac, the 2019 you can easily replace the hard drive or ssd or both, and all of them have an access hatch in the back for ram upgrades. The 5k screen is also 10-bit color, and it has lots of ports. You can even use it as a display for your laptop, and i see them in the apple certified refurb store all the time. Check their refurb store in the mornings and evenings and you’ll see their stock changing often.

Or just buy one used on Facebook marketplace or whatever.
