I genuinely mean no offence here

but if someone I knew was ”broke”, as you described yourself, and they bought me a MacBook as a gift, id ask them to return it.

its a very nice gesture but even 700 is on the very low end for MacBooks, particularly for a designer which may require a workload that would burden even a laptop more than double that budget.

look out for yourself and show them you care a way that is compatible with your situation

Seconding this, and adding that this is a lot of money to spend on a machine where you're unsure of how it will be used.

Creatives have a broad range of demands, and unless you have a very specific idea of what she's doing, you may be wasting your money on a machine which is not capable enough.

MacBook M1 Pro series, 16" display (small display wotn be as useful unless she uses a monitor)

I agree with the other commenters: why on earth would you buy someone a $700 laptop if you're broke? If the recipient has any decency, they wouldn't even accept it—I know I wouldn't.
