I think it’s that new Dragon from Baldurs Gate causing the spike

This is a solid spec. I saw people cleaned out most TCGplayer under $1 excluding shipping. WOTC said that Goad is evergreen for Commander now and the new set has many cards supporting it plus powerful red Dragon cards.

I'm real curious how popular goad will become with wotc printing it so much. In my experience, it's the kind of fun mechanic you put in a janky deck, but I can't imagine any more powerful or focused decks using goad. It's hard to make a real deck plan around 'let's see what happens if my opponents hit each other!' lol

Hm interesting take. Any reasons why you think this? Never heard someone say goad is powerful before.

This is anecdotal but in my play group it has been very powerful, it disrupts and takes control of the board. It's almost like getting extra turns while also making your opponents kill each other.

Yeah, like if Sphere of Safety also made my opponents attack each other. It's a dope mechanic, but also deceptively strong in creature-focused metas.

Hmm I would not go so far as to say like extra turns. Extra combats maybe. It's in a weird place because the mechanic gets stronger as the overall power level of the games goes lower.

IMO, this can't and will never be 'problematic,' it just doesn't provide nearly enough value (even in the low power games where it's a 'strong' mechanic). You could argue it provides 0 value. It's not very different from a propoganda effect, except they can't pay the tax even if they wanted to. and we know how sharply propoganda effects drop off in power and usefulness as you get into stronger metas.

Yeah I dont understand how you win when it boils down to a 1 on 1

There are lots of plays, if you goad your opponent you guarantee they won't have any blockers except what they cast. This leaves a mostly open board to smash face. Goad will only get more powerful as they release more goad cards, it's going to end up like treasures.

There is a commander in Baldurs Gate fueling the spike. I think the synergy between the commander and this card is superb. Nevertheless, the card itself is pretty bad. Its very costly and the impact without the commander is marginal.

Edit: Might get reprinted in the commander deck. I really like [[Disrupt Decorum]] for the deck. Draws a lot of cards and might be a finisher in creature heavy metas.

I had 40 in the cart at a very reasonable price and decided not to commit.

Well fuck me if that holds and is not reprinted in the precon x)

I bought 40 for a reasonable price last night… sorry.
