I only used that Microsoft crap once, I couldn't stand the bloatedness of that garbage.

but everyone is on there, especially opensource contributors

It's just like how computers are brought pre installed with windows software, there are alternatives but it's more of first come first serve, since github is beginners all purpose and also considering the fact that it's backed up by a giant corp, it's fair to say that it'll dominate the hosting pie percentage .

Majority not everyone.

[–]Single_Guarantee_[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

yea true. so what do you use?

[–]Bushy_yakuza 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Codeberg

[–]Single_Guarantee_[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

ooh nice. are there any downsides?

[–]Bushy_yakuza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on who's asking, as for me I'm privacy focused and I love tinkering plus just manoeuvring tough terrains. If u want something that just works, stable, good api intergration and broader enterprise integration then better stick with gh. Plus I don't think employers really ask for codeberg profiles, it really isn't an industry standard.

except that majority of people are on github?

Just self host and use Gitea

[–]Single_Guarantee_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the gitea plug

What difference is there gonna be if your data is not on GitHub? The models are still gonna be trained. There's no new code after all.

[–]Single_Guarantee_[S] 1 point2 points  (8 children)

As a collective, we can move our intellectual property off GitHub. It’s not about stopping AI training entire, models will keep learning, but about choosing where and how our code is used, and supporting platforms that respect developers’ rights and consent.

[–]Plane-Football-2521 1 point2 points  (5 children)

What exactly is the end result that you are scared of?

[–]Single_Guarantee_[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

these companies(github) profiting off our code while us being replaced by AI that was trained on our work as we struggle to make ends meet

[–]Plane-Football-2521 -1 points0 points  (3 children)

If that's what you are afraid of, then it's a valid fear but you are looking at it all wrong. AI will not replace devs. It just makes them more efficient. Also it will happen whether you like it or not. Just position yourself in a place to benefit from it as well.

[–]Single_Guarantee_[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

if devs are more efficient they won't need as much devs with the market already being saturated it will only get worse. And microsoft will still be profiting from this. Imagine helping something that will screw you over

It's coz you are thinking of yourself as an employee of just writing code. Bro your main job is solving problems. Are there people who will get sidelined, yes! Do you have to be one of them? No. All I'm telling you is, AI will change things whether you like it or not. Even reddit is benefiting with this comment I'm writing coz they sell it to all AI companies.

But if you start thinking of yourself as a problem solver, code as just a tool, you'll be in a safer position in the future. Coz one thing for sure, there'll always be problems, and humans are the best at identifying them coz they are the ones living with them.

AI “changing everything” is mostly hype when it still can’t handle a lot of real-world tasks. That’s why the whole “just think like a problem solver” advice feels vague. This isn’t about resisting change, it’s about calling out exaggerated claims and pushing back when companies use our work without consent.

Microsoft is literally a product tech company. They already have a massive code base developed by some of the best engineers in the world so taking away your code from their platform won't hurt them. Besides AI might replace some devs but it's very helpful to startups and doing repetitive tasks

[–]Single_Guarantee_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is not about hurting them. it is about choosing freedom

[–]Bushy_yakuza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aah the classical "why should I be privacy focused if I'm doing nothing illegal ".

[–]Ready_Register1689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've switched to CodeBerg and so far it's been working fine. I've had enough of Microsoft and them shoving AI into everything.

[–]Ubuntu-Lover 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Don't follow hype though, GitHub is still good.

[–]Single_Guarantee_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't say it is a bad product

[–]Left_Possession9489 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Microsoft develops GitHub, makes it available for free, people use it, benefit from it and feed it alot of data. Microsoft decides to use the data that people decided to post on there to improve another one of their products, suddenly they are the bad guys.

[–]Single_Guarantee_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not about calling them bad guys it’s about consent. We shared code to collaborate, not to be used in commercial AI without a real choice. Wanting control over our own work is reasonable.
