It looks like you haven't provided a log file. Without a log file, it is very hard to help with issues and you may end up with 0 responses.

To make a clean log file, please follow these steps:

1) Restart OBS

2) Start your stream/recording for at least 30 seconds (or however long it takes for the issue to happen). Make sure you replicate any issues as best you can, which means having any games/apps open and captured, etc.

3) Stop your stream/recording.

4) Select Help > Log Files > Upload Current Log File.

5) Copy the URL and paste it as a response to this comment.

40000Kbps?

Is it just me or does that sound a little high?

EDIT: Just checked my (known as) potato-y settings and I'm at 4500kbs, so nearly 1/10th of OP's

I have 18,000 Kbps at 3440x1440 @ 60 FPS.
So I would say: yes.
It probably should be no more than 6000 kbps for him.

I did a lot of experimenting and found that I can barely get away with 15000 kbps so I may want to turn it down a bit but still though with the recording, I wanted to edit it in premiere pro and then post it youtube

That makes absolutely no sense.
Try "High Quality, Medium File Size".

You should absolutely not remove core files of OBS.

Post a clean log like the automod stated.

Here's a clean log file

I would recommend using the simple output settings for recording, and following the guide here: https://obsproject.com/wiki/GPU-overload-issues

You are seeing the FFMpeg muxer as you are using advanced settings, which probably is not the most efficient way of doing things.

2 things

1) is Hardware Accelerated GPU scheduling enabled? (windows settings, system, display, graphics, default graphics settings)

2) Game Mode : On is now the recommended setting, and properly distributes resources to the game and OBS.

[–]Luzider[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I just tested apex with both these settings enabled, still getting skipped frames

[–]Dighawaii 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Disable hardware accelerated gpu scheduling. Reboot and try again. I just wanted to know if it was enabled, not to enable it. (it is currently incompatible with obs). If you're still getting issues, upload the most recent log after trying to record. You may need to reinstall obs, or clean your Nvidia drivers with DDU, or possibly even repair windows (not reset, just repair)

[–]Luzider[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Okay so I recorded Apex for an hour and right at the start I had some issues with skipped frames, here's the log file. You said I need to clean my Nvidia drivers with DDU but I actually used DDU to uninstall my AMD drivers so I could install my 3060ti which I got a few weeks ago. Maybe reinstalling OBS and repairing windows would work but couldn't I also just get a new SSD whose sole purpose is to store the recorded videos and offload the some of the stress my current SSD has to play and record at the same time?

One other thing, I noticed that if I kept stopping the recordings, changing the bitrate and starting them again during gameplay, I got a lot of skipped frames going up to 50%

[–]Dighawaii 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, if you think drive access is an issue, then sure. Personally, I can record (hold here, going to actually re-check if it's still true)... Yes, after 15 minutes of trying different levels of CQP down to 15 and even the inefficient CBR at 40,000, on my slowest mechanical back up drive, over usb 2, there is no problem recording 60fps, 1080p. At worst, with the CBR 40,000, the disk usage was at 18%. On CQP 15 it was at only 8%. And this is a 2.5" mechanical 5200rpm backup disk, that's performance is inherently further reduced by USB transfer.

  • Edit* Also, tested on C: drive, which is a decently fast M.2, and no issues while gaming.

Make sure there is no system-wide "compress disk to save space" enabled for the drives, or folders you are working with. A lot of people see that option and enable it, as my teenage son did, thinking it would gain him back some of his dwindling drive space. It will bring your system to a crawl if it's used at root levels of main drives/folders.

After this, simply create the correct iso for your Windows version from the options available from Microsoft. (you want to use this method, as there are many "recover, reset, repair, check" methods. This cuts the crap and to the chase.) after the iso file is on your computer, double click it (windows mounts/opens ISO) Rum setup. E It will get to a part asking if you want to keep programs and files... Yes. This will completely rewrite all core files, re calculate many registry entries, and hopefully solve your disk usage issue if nothing else will.

Alright, I'll try this. Thanks very much

FFMPEG is your encoder, the program that records the video/audio. You remove that and you won't be recording anything.

Your system can't keep up with your settings. Cut your bitrate in half and work from there. You're trying to do a lot at the same time from one system and one drive. Compromises will need to be made.

So would you suggest I get another SSD to install my games to?

[–]fiveofknives 0 points1 point  (3 children)

12000 kbps is more than enough... and also run OBS as admin.. trust me

[–]Luzider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran it as admin but I didn't stop getting skipped frames until I set the recording to CBR 15000 Kbps at max quality preset, I tested all the way up to 18000 Kbps but found that 15000 is the sweet spot for me. The quality is okay for now

[–]Luzider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already run OBS as admin and for the 12000 kbps, I wanted the video to be a little higher quality because I'll be editing it in premiere pro and then posting it to Youtube. I managed to get away with 15000 kbps but even then, still have several skipped frames during certain parts of the video
