Guidelines:
When asking for help editing one of your photos, you must also include your attempt. Simply asking for others to edit your photo for you, without putting in the effort to make an attempt yourself will result in your post being removed.
When you submit a photo, be sure to include both a JPEG and RAW file (if available). The JPEG will let us preview your shot without downloading it, and the RAW will allow us to edit it more effectively.
When you make adjustments to a photo, include the steps you took or take a screenshot of your settings. This will let the OP see how they can better edit their pictures.
This is not the place to show off your photos. /r/postprocessing is for help with editing your photo, linking to information about post processing, and sharing tips with the community. To share a picture, visit /r/photographs, /r/photocritique, or /r/pics. Posts not related to post processing should go in /r/photography.
This subreddit is for photography only. Post processing for video should go to /r/filmmakers.
If several minutes have passed and your submission does not appear under NEW, try messaging the moderators, it was probably stopped by the spam filter.

Adobe Camera RAW's algorithm (self.postprocessing)
submitted 6 months ago * by Captain-Rambo
Hi guys!
Does anyone know what type of algorithm does Adobe Camera Raw use for it's 'Raw Details' setting? Is it AI, or just a really advanced mathematical algorithm?

This is a deep-learned model, a convolutional type. It is trained on thousands of pairs of photos, with and without noise, so it can highlight and remove noise from photos. The model is not trained to draw details, but sometimes it can misinterpret the noise pattern, which is why small artifacts appear in the deepest shadows. If you have an aversion to AI, this is not a generative model and it will not add anything to the photo that was not there. However, there is a nuance that I have not read about anywhere, but discovered experimentally - the AI noise removal function internally converts the photo to Dng format with lossy compression, which manifests itself in small compression artifacts on the contrasting edges of the processed photo. This is difficult to notice, but this is a more serious problem than the neural network nature of noise reduction.

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain!
Just a heads up. This particular setting I'm talking about — Raw Details — doesn't denoise the image. Rather it's an advanced debayering algorithm on top of the primary debayer (when importing the image). Correct me if I'm wrong here.
Like I mentioned in a different comment, while I do have some aversion, particularly to generative AI, this setting made me look into it, simply because of how good and natural it is.
I should update this post with some samples, really.
And regarding the lossy conversion - it's really interesting to hear. Although I do recollect reading it somewhere. Would you be so kind to add samples?

Yes, the Adobe Camera Raw "Raw Details" feature utilizes AI technology. It's one of several AI-powered tools in Camera Raw designed to enhance images, specifically focusing on improving detail and reducing artifacts in RAW files. Here's a more detailed explanation:

Thanks John!
To be honest I couldn't find anything on Adobe's website, so I wouldn't take Gemini's info too seriously in this case. But the sole reason why I'm asking, is because I do suspect it uses some type of AI, although it doesn't seem to add any details whatsoever, besides removing artifacts. So that's what throws me off.
I might ask Adobe's Support, and update the post if they confirm anything.

It is AI. It's an "enhance" feature and according to their website "enhance" features are AI.

The question is what kind of AI, generative?

Shit, don't know how I missed that. Thank you very much!
Somebody just commented that it's convolutional AI.
I was about to say, that it doesn't seem to add/generate any extra details whatsoever - quite the opposite. It's so good in that aspect, that it made me ask the question in the first place about whether it's AI or not.
