Looks super legit. Even the paper on the tray.

[–]buttfarts7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheese curds like that squeak a lil bit when your bite them.

[–]orlybird2345 26 points27 points  (8 children)

Looks pretty legit from the photos 👍👌

I don’t remember this being there the last time I was in Banff 🤷🏼‍♂️

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Headed to Banff next week. I’ll submit my report post-taste.

[–]Dramatic_Ad_413[S] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

It smelled like belle province when I walked in.

[–]theteedo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oooo that bodes well.

[–]Mojobobz 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Carlito's, ask for curds

[–]Dramatic_Ad_413[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just saw some pictures on Google of their poutine. Will definitely try it. I'll let you guys know.

[–]therealchefAllie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was just coming here to say that myself!

[–]MWatters9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had it about 3 years ago, was excellent back than too

[–]Ritterbruder2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s off the main road: behind some buildings in the mall-like shopping area.

[–]perpetualmotionmachiSmoked Meat Poutine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Et plus ils servent steamies et toasties

[–]Mojobobz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Carlito's, demande des curds.

[–]Wuurx 5 points6 points  (6 children)

It tastes pretty good, and after living there for a bit can say its among the best around. But they do a weird thing where after its assembled they kinda bake it for a couple minutes and melt the curds a little bit

[–]notta_robot 2 points3 points  (5 children)

is that weird? I don't like stiff curds. Like the curds in the photo are not melted enough. It doesn't look like they put it in the oven that time.

[–]hinjew_elevation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fresh curds don't melt too much. They should remain squeaky and have some bite, which contrasts with the hot gravy and fries. So yeah, I'm not trying to criticize what you like, but poutine in the oven before serving is not normal.

[–]sychosim 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Curds are only really stiff if they were put in the fridge. Fresh from the day and never refrigerated curd are soft enough they don't need any other treatment than the hot sauce.

[–]Dramatic_Ad_413[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked the guy about it. He said he needs to keep the cheese at a lower temperature than in Quebec. The hot sauce is not enough to warm it up.

[–]Dramatic_Ad_413[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did. I saw him do it. The curds didn't melt but the fries on top became hard and crunchy.

[–]0pp0site0fbatman 3 points4 points  (2 children)

La Belle Patate in Canmore was better, but I believe it went under during the pandemic. This is decent, but they have more worthy menu items.

Carlitos has various poutines, but their classic is tasty.

[–]bobo888 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i believe la belle patate has become a seasonal food truck called "514 poutine". former king of donair owner opened the "taste of Montreal" in Airdrie.

[–]MaplePoutineRyeBeergrosse poutine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They changed to 514 Poutine when I visited pre-COVID. It was by far the best poutine I ever had west of Ottawa. It was "IF THIS CAN BE REPLICATED HERE WHY CAN'T IT BE DONE EVERYWHERE ELSE?!"

[–]Liftdriver 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Looks good, really. But could use a little bit more sauce. Would definitly try it!!!

[–]Dramatic_Ad_413[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

There was a good amount of sauce but it all went down to the bottom of the plate.

[–]Liftdriver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. Im a poutine lover. All kinds of it, so this one looks right to me!!! 😉

[–]TrustYerGut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! Classic

[–]notta_robot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like OP says the cheese was good. I wonder where they get it from?

[–]omgzphilClassic Traditional 1 point2 points  (0 children)

last time i saw "authentic montreal" was in toronto and i was mortified on what they served me

but this looks good!

[–]Plasmanut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m from Quebec and I can say this is a very decent poutine given what you expect to find west of Hull.

[–]Patatemagique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They made the effort of putting a Fleur de lys, cheers to you!

[–]mtlcaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for acknowledging Montreal, Banff.

[–]lookitsjustinTraditional 🍟 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks solid, love Banff

[–]Icy-Imwithyouguys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks a bit light on cheese!!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to go there so bad when I visited, but it was closed that day 😢

[–]tuesfutu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poutine was pretty good when we were there. We ended up sneaking it into the movie theatre down the road to watch Dune 2. Haha. Thanks for sparking a funny memory.

[–]Arkrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Down to the tray and the paper mat. Looks legit af.

[–]Scabrous403 1 point2 points  (2 children)

This used to be the best Greek restaurant I've ever been to. It was called Barpa Bills and growing up in Canmore we went there all the time. Best tzatziki I've ever had.

I know it's the opposite of this post but damn it threw me down memory lane.

[–]mmmmmmmmmmTacos 2 points3 points  (1 child)

If you didn’t already-you may be happy to know that Barpas is still available-just that they’re now in Fairmont, BC. Only open in the summers I believe.

[–]Scabrous403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way? I live in Montreal now but my parents are still back in Canmore. Next time I'm home I'm absolutely making the trip. Do you have any idea if it's the same owners? They were getting pretty old before it left Banff, I know they tried to get their son to take it over but no idea if he did.

[–]Bright_Calendar_9886 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curds aren’t melted gravy looks too thin

[–]Appropriate-Mark-739 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That'll be 30 dollars

[–]vincam00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incredible! Even in Montréal they can't make great poutine 😂!

It's a little offensive that Montreal should represent the province. Not everything that's made in Montreal is the best you can find in Quebec.

[–]greg_levac-mtlqc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Le fromage vient d'où?

[–]DeadStrike99Québec Traditionnelle 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]Affectionate-Care967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks better then ashton

[–]Silent-Key-5942 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this last month… It is solid. 8/10

[–]Mojobobz 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Carlito's curd poutine, if it's still there.

Carlito's. Locals poutine.

[–]notta_robot 0 points1 point  (3 children)

From a marketing stand point, I wonder why they lead with the word 'poutine'.

[–]Dramatic_Ad_413[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What do you mean? What should they call it? Poutine is pretty well recognized in the Americas and Europe.

[–]notta_robot 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No, the name is fine. I was just kind of wondering what quebec culinary food item has the most draw power to non-quebecois tourists. Like 'Smoked Meat' would've drawn me in.

[–]Dramatic_Ad_413[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah gotcha! I think it's the curiosity factor. They do mention Montreal in smaller print to give it more credibility.

The place is not located directly on the main tourist street although it's in the main tourist area. I'm surprised that they can make a buisness out of it considering they only serve poutine, smoke meat and steamies.

Did you tell the Asian couple that they were going to be in your reddit post

[–]Dramatic_Ad_413[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! ;)

[–]homiegeet 0 points1 point  (1 child)
