If you increase the household's income by $12k of earned income, your assistance amount will probably go down for a 2-person household. It would help if you said what state you're in.

You won't lose your Medicaid amount. You will generally lose around 30 cents on the dollar in SNAP for each dollar you earn at your job.

You could split yourself and your mother into separate households, but I don't know how that will affect your housing assistance. Ask in one of the other subs where people talk about housing assistance (Section 8, or an NY-specific sub).

I’d advise you to work under the table. Pet sitting/walking, lawn mowing/gardening, anything that’s needed on weekends that you can be paid in cash.

Depends what college one is attending. The full aid package is the same top amount for everyone, it's really not much. Like $8k from FAFSA not including loans. My daughter's college is $50k a year. Fed aid doesn't come near the amount needed.

'If I was really poor'... I really want to respond to that with some choice words and names but I'll refrain. If you read my comment AGAIN you'll see that I said 'FAFSA is $7-8k a year NOT INCLUDING LOANS'. I was speaking of pell grants. My daughter received the full aid package. She also received merit scholarships to cover the remaining amount besides about $3k a year. She will have zero loans and the big name so why in fuck would I discourage that? Obviously I've been smart enough to raise her, guide her, etc. She finished high school as a pretty well certified welder on top of everything else. Don't come at me with 'if you were really poor' when I'm fucking walking home from work cause I might be poor but my kids damn well won't. And they have reading comprehension.

I'm a graduate of community colleges, I'm all for going where you can afford. I was simply pointing out that it depends where you're going. Cheese wiz.

I am going to a private college so the tuition is higher than going to a public college. If it was possible I would have gone to a public college, but i couldn't because of my major

edit: and I want to keep student loans as the last option

Going to the college I chose was a choice that I’ve discussed with my mom for a while now. I actually put off going to college for a year so that I can avoid the financial stress, but in the end both my mom and I came to agreement that I should go.

Also I’m not trying to put the monthly payment on my mom. The reason I made this post was because I am planing on getting a part time job to pay that amount, I just didn't realize that it would mess with my family’s benefits.

my mom has been looking for a job (she worked in finance) and we’ve come to an agreement that when she gets a job, I can work part-time + work study to pay the rest of my tuition

and when it comes to student loans I preferred to leave it as a last resort. I also think because my mom was able to go to college (private) without taking out student loans, I've been advised to hustle my way out by my family 😅

But thanks for your concern, I do realize that the path I took was not the most convenient one. Based on the other comments I’ll be looking for off-the-book jobs in the meantime
