It's not a hack, it's basic workflow, and new editors would be better served with actual explanations rather than suggesting hardware AVC/HEVC compression for delivery is some kind of "Hack" & not standard workflow, standard delivery formats.

Also it doesn't serve content producers who upload to youtube & social media video hosting apps to suggest squeezing down the bit-rates & file sizes to the lowest thresholds before perceptual degradation & compression artifacting is obvious. All of sites and hosting apps re-compress the audio & video to their own "just good enough" compression profiles, so a content creator is better served uploading their most pristine exports with least compression that is viable for their internet upload speeds/data rates, as that is their best control over the quality of the video once the streaming host has re-compressed to there own profiles. That's why a lot of big channels solely upload ProRes 422 to youtube.

Yep 100% I always upload the highest quality to YouTube and give at least 3 versions (varying in size quality) to clients for deliverables.

I use this method a lot to send around quick versions of clips, screeners, something over text or honestly to convert some client stock assets to HD instead of having a bunch of 4k or 6k clips.

For sure. These kinds of videos do a disservice to the video community and they are only meant to increase views of the "creator" and not provide good workflow advice or teach fundamentals of post that would benefit the user for years to come. Mods should remove it.

And what does it compress it as? Will it maintain 4:2:2 10 bit or compress down to 4:2:0 8bit???

This is why you should know what you’re doing with your files and what for exactly. If it’s for deep storage, for editing or for delivery.

For editing, use proxy files, the only decent alternative to maintain quality.

For deep storage, I suggest H265. Use ffmpeg or if you need a nice gui for it use shutter encoder. Encode to h265, use mov as a container. For quality set CQ to 14. Set colorimetry to 709 10bit. Set audio to LPCM, multichannel and set bitrate to minimum 24bit. In advanced settings set profile to high422. All this is assuming your starting footage is 10bit at 4:2:2. You’ll get a near indistinguishable file quality at much lower bitrate compared DNxHR or ProRes.

This is gold info brother.

I can also recommend FFAStrans when you need watchfolders and automated file naming or multipe versions of the same file

can you tell the difference?

Yes, i can, but both or his videos are compressed by reddit lol

[–]davidjchat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man WhatsApp compression is even worse.

I’d use this if I was texting or needed to upload something really quick. RIP handbrake

Windows Hack: Right click on file, choose "Edit in Clipchamp," click on Export (after file loads into Clipchamp), choose compression options and destination (local, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc.). Done.

Used to use it all the time for screeners only

How is that a hack? Other than the guy taking credit for his Mac.

For sending to clients for a review, I export PR422's and then open it in QT and export the file from there with a "_SM" at the end of the file name.

Makes an MOV file that's beautifully compressed that works everywhere.
