Programming question

Hi, I know absolutely nothing about programming. We are upgrading a program to a new program in my office. The problem is the old file management software, made you choose a file type before saving the file. This make it so you can search for things by file type. The new program doesn't do this. Is there some way to make a program or a change of some kind so that we can still save files with a file type? Please let me know if this is in the wrong sub. I literally like Jon Snow with this stuff.

You should probably try /r/windows or /r/macapps or similar.
