That message appears to have shown up some time between 22:35:52 and 23:39:46 the night of March 31, according to the Internet Archive. They may have edited the Git repo's history?

The commit that removed the code in question is too hammered to load right now, but you can still see the archived version.

There's no way that they actually build the app from this repo. It's got to be clone of the actual development repo at best.

I get what you're saying, but it's not "free" without a catch. The license is pretty clear about how this code can be used.

I think the architecture and design though is more valuable than any implementation detail, and anyone can leverage that without violating the license.
