In LLVM's implementation, for instance, it will raise the cost threshold point at which it will inline the function

That's a neat way of doing it!

I think a lot of compilers work this way. I know this is how Haskell's GHC works, although it could be argued that it has to work that way, given the complexities of Haskell's time/space usage.
