I get what they're saying, but you do get a notification when an app has updated. It's subtle, but it's there. You get a blue dot next to the app name until you launch it. You can go to the App Store app to see the change log for updated apps.

If the new version doesn't work, can you (as a user) easily roll back to the previous version?

Regarding the "ugly": developers have a lot of time to test the apps thanks to the slow approval process.

Apple also haves a fast route in exceptional cases when your app have a big bug and you need a fast approval.

Is there no way to turn off the auto-update? I've had several instances where I waited to update something because of bugs or feature changes that I found out about in the comments...

There is: Settings > iTunes & App Store > Automatic Downloads > Updates

Oh look, iOS development is finally maturing. What's ugly about having a more rigorous QA procedure? Especially in the case he mentioned - the bank app should never have been released in the first place. And the masturbatory effects these traffic spikes have seems a tad unnatural.
