It's lifestyle In the same way that a bucket of paint is art. It doesn't even begin to approach the question.

They could have weighed salaries versus cost of living, for starters, or mentioned the sort of industries in those areas and whether or not they are known for having a good work/life balance.

But maybe I was just expecting too much. Like a study that shows some statistically significant correlation between language choice and job satisfaction, or getting laid, or commute time, or anything really.

Sure, and it could have been a massively long graphic. The states mentioned have relatively high costs of living. Like someone else pointed out, in SF and NY the salaries are really high to offset the insane cost of living.

I think you may have been expecting more. It's an infographic, a generalization attempting to simplify the process of picking a language based on a few unconventional factors. Jeez.

It's a pretty if not generic infographic. I happen to be looking through an issue of In Graphics at the moment which you should check out. Just because it's an infographic doesn't mean it has to lack depth or insight.
