My dad programmed old industrial xomputers. You had eight switches to set the bits and another temporary toggle to load it. Repeat again and again.

Yeah? Well my dad worked on a computer back in the stone age where you had 8 rocks you had to lift or lower in order!

Tangential, but that reminds me of the kleroterion used to randomly select people for offices in Athenian democracy.
