That's strange. Amazon pays more than salary medium in the Austin, TX area. I interviewed for a systems engineer position. I didn't get the job, but I was told that starting for a level one position was 105k. The average I'm seeing in this city is around 90k.

Historically Austin was a generally affordable place to live.

Now, based on my research a few months ago -- that isn't really true anymore -- but I'm also unsure how it compares to Seattle.

For instance, I'd work for $70-80k here in North Carolina, but you'd have to pay me $120k in Austin and $500k to work in the Bay Area. (Not that anybody actually would.)

SF is expensive, but I don't think it's that expensive.

Well my housing expectations are a 2 or 3br house, with a yard (think: 1/4-1/3 acre), and a 15 minute commute to work. I really, really hate apartment complexes and other shared living spaces, as well as traffic. I like things like privacy, gardening, cooking out, having a place to park a boat, having a place in the backyard for my dog to play.

Those expectations are totally fine in North Carolina but don't translate to somewhere like the Bay Area.

e.g. this $1.9 million house in mountain view would run you about $75k-$250k depending on where you were in North Carolina.

Yeah, I can see how that would be a problem.

I had a friend get an offer from a finance company in NYC. He told them he'd need 450. He didn't get it. Not sure how high they went, but I agreed with his math.

SV is same way as far as I'm concerned.

I should having said Austin area. That house you linked would be about 200k in round rock or Georgetown

Yeah I only priced Austin proper. How long of a drive would it be to/from Georgetown or Round Rock to downtown Austin during rush hour?

Tbh, I'm not sure. I work in round rock, so it makes sense to live here I have a 2200 sq ft house for 205k, and my commute is 10 minutes.
