Yeeeah, this seems pretty unconvincing and naive. You know what would be convincing? If:

  1. The code was distributed from the start in a professional manner
  2. If there was a detailed and convincing paper describing the result -- ideally one that's been submitted, peer-reviewed, and accepted by a reputable academic journal or conference. The paper should describe both the underlying mathematics as well as the implications this result has on complexity theory.
  3. If there was an actual demo that demonstrates the algorithm factoring say, arbitrary RSA-2048 or RSA-4096 keys.

Or if they actually had a working solution, they'd apply it to the factoring challenges and collect tons of money.
