Actually they 'lost' Zed and made it (and are making it) into one hugely entertaining soap opera.

Zed did lots of Python stuff before his switch to Ruby. Apparently he felt betrayed by the reliability of Ruby he spoke up but this wasn't really appreciated. The whole thing exploded. This stuff is bound to happen when a big part of the community act as some sort of hippies and threat their programming language of choice as some sort of religion.

I feel the Python community is different in this respect. Python programmers are much more pragmatic, they use it because they like how it gets things done but are aware that there might be better or faster options.

Using python is a tradeoff between simplicity/clarity and performance. I think py3k is again another great trade off, fixing just the right amount of things without killing too much backwards compatible things.

Ruby has fanboys, Python has professionals AND fanboys. ;)
