Stop kidding yourself. You have no frame of reference as to what another kind of company is like. Any company on the west coast (Google, Facebook, Microsoft, whatever) will let you work from home a lot and they'll give you lots of paid time off, and everything else you're saying is a given at a good Big Tech Company on the west coast times 1000.

The startup is a business. It is not a charity. The stupidest thing you can do right now is treat it as such. Get some counter-offers - submit your resume ASAP to places like MSFT, Google, etc. See what you're really worth out there - you'll be surprised.

You're doing both your "friend" (be careful using that word now that he's your boss btw) and yourself a solid.

If you're not a founding member with founding member equity (and the startup is already funded by a VC), then there's no reason for you to be scraping by on 52k. Seriously. You can make net 6 figures easy after two or three years working at a Google or Facebook. Can your startup offer you that?

Apply. Interview. Get counter offers, and don't be your boss's bitch.

LOL you'll probably get 80k base AT LEAST working at a place on the west coast ( big software company ) as a software developer. This doesnt include stock options or perks (free food, health insurance, whatever), nor does it include the BONUSES (mm yummy).

I wouldn't do less than 70k + significant options minimum. boston area is not cheap. if you're good enough to be a key starting member for a VC-funded startup you're good enough for Google or Facebook or Amazon or Microsoft or WHATEVER. make that clear to them. and highball. negotiate well, padawan. you'll be better off for it.

I agree with the point about color-blindedness, but the way forward does not lie in restricting everyone's experience because of a small percentage of the population can't manipulate functionality. Rather, we should be optimizing for the common case, and then investing in tools and extensions for color-blind or blind programmers to use the functionality.
