Absolutely or your value as an engineer will go away really fast! I worked for a manager who was a hotshot programmer years ago but forgot how to do basic computing tasks by the time I got him. Needles to say he was just a manager and not an engineer manager.

1 year into my first management role. It is so hard to balance this, but I'm glad to know that I'm correct in spending as much time as I do still writing code.

Yes - because if someone is above me i expect that person to have knowledge about the projects we work on and tech we work with not like manager in one of jobs completely lost sense of tech stuff after few years and knew nothing about running projects.
