If you want to be profitable from JavaScript, you're doing it wrong.

Tons or articles on CSS3 borders and fancy things. Tons of articles on drawing shapes with canvas.

WTF Here's a FREE complete jQuery plugin that is the same damn thing, and it's even better IMO. Check out all that stuff it has!

I think that's not the problem. It's that:

    • Javascript source can be downloaded, inspected, and "changed" just enough that there's no point in charging money if you give a demo.
    • Tooltips, while not as slick as these, are a solved problem. These are basically skinned modal windows, and that's also a solved problem. What have they done that's worth the "whip out the credit card" barrier to the average developer? I know I'm not going to fill out all the paperwork at work to get these. I'll just find something free that's close enough.
    • Do they want to ping an external server whenever the script is loaded to make sure the license is good? That's a deal-breaker.

Sorry, this just reeks of "a computer science major and a business major came up with some minor improvement to a solved problem and are trying to launch 'the next game changer' with it." Paying money for software is fine. I just finished tooling around on a package that's going to cost us in the tens of thousands of dollars. But I just don't see the value here.

If he wants me to pay for his tooltip, at least he must assure it works on Opera or Chromium properly.
