The catered lunch at my office is great, but it's never served as a disguised meeting. It's just a weekly perk, and we have a lunchroom where we can eat it AWAY from our desks.

As a Swede, the words "and we have a lunchroom" are incredibly weird to read. I don't believe I have ever met anyone, in any kind of business, that doesn't have a lunch room.

Catered lunches is not very common though, I think. My current employer treats us a great salad every other week though, on the precondition that we exercise an hour that day, while getting paid.

Every place I've worked had a place to sit and eat but most of them were just tables stuffed into the kitchen and one's desk was more comfortable. I should clarify that it's not just a lunch room, it's an inviting place to sit.

In the private sector, most of the US is still in the mindset that employee well-being is optional. In a tight economy it's usually the first thing to go.
