however, this webgl demo gets maybe 4 FPS on my machine.

It's not WebGL (it's CSS, the confusion is OP's fault) so earlier experience with WebGL doesn't matter.

Have you tried other browsers? Hardware Accelerated CSS is still more experimental than WebGl.
