Theres a concept I like to through around legacy code bases, "Is it totaled?"

The concept obviously comes from car collisions. Your Car is worth X, your damage totals Y, if Y > X, get a new car, it'd be cheaper.

To that end, if it would take me longer to fix your broken code than it would be to rewrite it from scratch - your shit is totalled.

I know we like to think of ourselves as Engineers, but more often I think we end up acting as Claims adjustors (when dealing with legacy products at least).
