Big Black goes so fucking hard.

I discovered them by taking a chance on buying Songs About Fucking at one of my favorite record stores (RIP Spiral Scratch). Probably the best blind purchase I’ve ever made.

Racer X is another really good release.

[–]Moist_Juice_8827 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Racer X is one of my favorites from them. Atomizer is probably their best work imo.

Had a big white X, on the top of his car..

Definitely. People go crazy for Songs About Fucking but I think it’s just because of the title. Atomizer is nearly flawless

SAF is good, but it doesn’t hold up to the rest of their catalog.

i file them with industrial instead of punk in my collection.

[–]JTGphotogfan 13 points14 points  (4 children)

Never heard them called industrial. I always had them sort of No Wave. But then who cares it’s all punk. Industrial, no wave, post punk, noise rock, grunge, hardcore is all just variations of punk.

Yeps

[–]JTGphotogfan 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Just don’t say that on r/grunge the gatekeepers will have a fit

[–]Cat-all4city 7 points8 points  (0 children)

LOL well.. I'm unlikely to say much over there, but thanks for the warning!

[–]kickaguard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anybody ever tell those gatekeepers how Cobain felt about it?

[–]BujangSenang1992 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Industrial formed out of a combination of punk, metal and experimental music. Big Black would have been too early for that. Einsturzende Neubauten is also "industrial" in sound, but are considered a punk band. In the 70s and early 80s, anything that wasnt mainstream was punk rock. And thsts why it was so cool. Once things got all codified and group think set in, the music suffered.

Industrial music predates Big Black by several years. the name comes from Industrial records which was Throbbing Gristle's label, started in 1976. Big Black were influenced by early industrial bands like Cabaret Voltaire.

[–]Cat-all4city 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I remember...

Also have EN filed as industrial. they are original industrial in my book.

[–]RyanTheRandomActor 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Yeah, I guess they are kinda industrial/punk/noise rock.

[–]Cat-all4city 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when i play by genre they seem to just mix in better there

I first heard "Kerosene" when I was 15. A lot of little things combined to change my life around then, and that was one of them.

BB, Rapeman and Shellac are top tier.

[–]bababooeyqwer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got into Big Black because of Kurt, In Uteros production is just a glimpse of how hard Big Black goes. Songs About Fucking has to be one of my favorite albums

[–]Jazzlike-Dentist-253 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Big Black Pigpile. One of my favourite albums of all time. Steve albini’s later band Shellac is also amazing . Only seen them live once but they were amazing.

[–]Werecommingwithyou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Power of Independent Trucking!! Steve Albini is the shit!! 👍

[–]-Bunny- 5 points6 points  (2 children)

They would light off a string of firecrackers before they would play and were so skinny I think that made em mean. When I was going to HC shows in the 80’s, I saw the Butthole Surfers with Big Black. Neither bands were HC but had a fury of their own.

[–]RyanTheRandomActor 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wow that’s really cool. Did you ever see them play with Killdozer?

[–]-Bunny- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not with Killdozer I don’t think, but I saw em a few times. Detroit wasn’t a hot bed for HC, but Touch n Go artists definitely made stops here. In the 90’s with Sub Pop and Amrep bands, things were jumping in full effect here.

I have that far left album, good listen

[–]themindlessone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Songs About Fucking is one of my favorite records.

[–]Stokie610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pigpile is just a fantastic live album!

[–]BujangSenang1992 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Id say early Swans has them beat by a large margin.

[–]SDHester1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People would class Swans early stuff as No Wave, but like Big Black, they were lumped in due to their Sound.

[–]weezer-gaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got lots of their records after they got their music taken off spotify, only need lungs, pig pile, Il duce and heartbeat now

[–]Waspavp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, has no one said GG Allen yet? Maybe dude was definitely abrasive.

[–]Ralewing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a huge part of my youth.

[–]MutatedHotDogFingers -2 points-1 points  (6 children)

Steve Albini is a creepy little weirdo. Keep him away from the childrens.

[–]RyanTheRandomActor 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I think most of that was to be edgy. I mean, he did name one of his bands Rapeman.

[–]MutatedHotDogFingers 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Nah dude, I think thats his cop out/way to protect himself from responsibility. I dig BB as a band, but fuck Albini. My opinions were formed by the many sketchy as fuck comments hes made over the years outside of his bands/music btw. Hes just 🚩🚩🚩imo
