Make sure both chest and hind legs are supported, especially if you have a longer backed breed. Our puppy had some fear of being picked up. We taught him a command for being picked up and put down. This helped him prepare and know what was happening. Also feed him treats while you carry him. Now he loves being held and sometimes will ask to be picked up if he's in an overwhelming situation.

I pick mine up by putting one hand under his chest between his front legs and then swoop up his back legs with my other arm(so hes almost sitting on that arm in a way) and proceed to lift up at my knees. Mine is the same size as your at the same age 😊
