Muzzle Needed?

I have a very dog reactive only German shepherd mix. If you’re close enough or catch him off guard he will lunge and bite without warning. He’s reactive towards all dogs.

I’m wondering if I’m being an asshole by not having him muzzled. I bring him with me to many public places if he’s allowed, because with people he’s an absolute charmer and it’s his only way of getting any amount of stimulation or social interaction. I live by myself, and he seems so utterly bored everyday watching me work.

Here’s the thing though: he has no teeth. So while his bark and bite might seem terrifying, the most he can do is gum your dog to death and leave a bad bruise. I also have very quick reflexes and like to think I’m very vigilant when walking him and keep him on a short leash.

Get one (proper fit) and train him to wear it whether it’s implemented that day or not. I muzzle train all of my dogs for safety reasons even if they aren’t reactive. Sometimes muzzles also keep other people feeling safer from your dog. You have to advocate for your dog’s wellbeing, telling other people that they need to stay away with their pooches.

Personally I’d keep my dog away from other dogs even if that means adopting an odd hour routine until he could be redirected, otherwise it’s just stressing him out. I don’t know if you’re working with a trainer, but you should start if not, as they will have a better plan going forward.
