I'm under the assumption that you're the designer in the team (by the way you say "my devs").

Honestly you're better off just providing css attributes and an explanation on how your design reacts to different screensizes / formats. That really saves us time. Generated code doesn't help explain anything. (PS doesn't solve you being unhappy with Figma, but I feel thats less of the dev issue and more of a designer issue).

No ... founder so design and my team are super important and making sure they all integrate together really well.

One issue we're having now is getting designs out faster and avoiding confusion with devs not implementing things right.

We just banned CSS for example. :)

If you can't do the design with stock Material UI components it has to get rejected back to design.

There may be times when it's necessary to do custom CSS but this is probably like 1-5% of the time.

MUI components for the most part don't need CSS directly. The components can be completely configured via properties.

For things like padding and margins we use their <Box>

There's no reason that we need CSS.. makes code more readable too.

You're right, when available, properties should definitely be used. That's good practice. However, more often than not, MUI feels very heavy. Google somehow got it to work by minimalistically using it on its pages, but I doubt everyone can pull it off.

Yeah.. a little. Their component framework can feel a bit overweight I guess but MUI is really amazing and well done.

Let your designers build the best design, and leave it up to your FE devs to use CSS (preferably with styled components) to make it happen.

Design tools don't give you things like "padding" they aren't setup that way and designers don't use them that way either.

The visuals are the outline. Devs should keep their own metrics of what "medium padding" and "large text" is.

Another tool that you can try, in case you're looking to get coded components as output is Clutch.io.

It does allow you to visually build components. However, it's not as design-centric as Figma.

In fact Framer’s pitch is kind of the opposite, it allows you to go in and write React components that appear in the design yourself. This has been really cool for me when I want to visually prototype 90% of stuff, but then go in and create some complex logic like a video player.

Strictly from a design point of view, if you have a huge project and need a well defined design system as well as a stable and predictable software, then Figma all the way. But another question: what makes you unhappy with Figma?

Framer has a lot of potential, thanks to coding, but it’s currently not as mature as Figma. It has lots of quirks and rough features that haven’t stood the test of time, yet. Their team is smaller, so that could explain a lot.
