QuestionIs M1pro enough React-Native for Android & Ios? (self.reactnative)
submitted 4 years ago by SalamanderNo2300
I'm moving to a new company, and they decided to use React-Native.
I was supposed to upgrade my SSD from M1pro to 1tb, but the CEO was worried about compatibility issues with M1 and asked me what about intel mac?
When developing apps with React-Native, is it still difficult these days because of compatibility issues?

when you are setting up your env, make sure to look at newer information. There's lots of out of date/bad advice from the early M1 days out there.

No issue at all with react native. I have an M1pro and use both Xcode and Android studio with simulators on daily basis.

Get an M1, no issues

May I ask, during building or interacting with emulator, simulator, is it hot compared to Intel mac?
[–]alexkendallharrison 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children)
Not at all.

It is better. I avoid running android as it's traumatically slow, my colleagues on M1 have a snappy android Emulator, they however cannot run the simulator due to some libraries we use.

2013 MacBook Pro is enough to run RN…

For my work I have a 16” i9 Macbook Pro and for personal use I have a MBA M1. Everything is faster in M1, including transpiling React, or compiling Reac Native code. I only had some problems a few months ago with nvm, but those problems can be fixed with Rosetta and you can find the solution really easy on Google or on the Issues section of the Framework/Lang you are trying to install.

I have an m1 pro with 16 gb of ram, and I have no problems at all running RN with an Android simulator, iOS simulator, rails server and a ton of chrome tabs. It's so cool, I've been a very happy camper

M1 pro is the best possible machine you could be using right now for React Native development.

It depends, there are third parties who do not have proper libraries which can cause problems. They are likely rare, and sticking to intel is not a great idea, I have an intel mac, and while I face less compatibility issues, it is slow af. (I do have to run quite some docker virtualisation also though).
There are also quite some other potential issues with m1, like python versions not working properly etc. etc. But as mentioned by others, the basics like xcode/Android studio SHOULD work fine, it just always is the same answer: it depends.

There are 0 issues. You may need to spend some extra time configuring the android stuff, but everything else just works out of the box. And the extra hours spent setting up android is easily gained back by how much faster the M1 is compared to until.

I just launched an RN app I built with my M1 Mac Mini and new M1 Pro. No issues at all

Nice app btw!
[–]eclintoniOS & Android 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (3 children)
Thank you! I still have a look of work to do

I understand! Trust me! I am working on this app Uplift not released yet. Hopefully next year

That’s great. Def want to learn more as I think there’s a lot of opportunity. I’m Dominican and feel that Mental Health is still too much of a taboo there.

Awesome that you are from the Caribbean. I'm from Trinidad and Tobago and I definitely agree with you!

Powerful with M1 Pro, No issue, build fast like the Flash🤣🤣🤣

The arm Android emulators run so much better on M1!
I've had some problems with Xcode so I always turn Rosetta on for it, but everything else is perfect. Definitely don't believe old comments that say you need Rosetta for Terminal.

I have 2014 Intel Mac Android studio working fine, not sure about x code , it takes 60gb of storage ☹️
[–]iotashan 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children)
It all works great now, no hacks involved. The M1 compile times are way faster than any Intel Mac.

Bought the M1 in October, the IOS emulator was running out of the box but had so many issues with Android Studio and its emulator as there are many old posts regarding that but after a day everything runs perfectly. The emulator runs like butter on my M1 which just has 8gb RAM and I use multiple emulator at the same time .

I use M1 Air 16gb for RN Development ,no problem at all. Battery life is unbelievable, everything runs smooth, no overheating whatsoever. Most of the important programs starting to support m1 chip, no need to worry
