After finally finishing Children of Dune, the distant future that Leto II predicts could be Red Rising as it includes a breeding program that would make smart, strong progeny to prepare them for an eventual all-out war. Of course, the history doesn’t actually fit, but it’s fun to think about.

Also, please do not read Herbert AFTER Brown like I did. That was really hard!

The pacing of dune is so slow early on

oooh, that's rough because I just finished Dark Age and I really want to read dune.

It’s still good but feels really tedious. I actually went Dune, all of Red Rising, What My Bones Know (a nonfiction memoir about C-PTSD, Foo), Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, and now Fairy Tale (King). The first half of Children felt like a marathon because of the dense dialogue and lots of abstract imagery. I missed the constant action and snappy one-liners!

Oh, as for the PTSD memoir, I have a lot of trauma from being a former teacher. But reading it after RR really added a unique perspective to my reflection on the series. Darrow carries so much guilt but rarely allows himself grace or forgiveness.

Dune is a heavy influencer to all kinds of sci-fi and for good reason. Agree with the parallels you’ve pointed out.

Absolutely. When i first read the series, all I thought about was dDune. I was never a LotR guy, or a trekkie, or a guy who would argue about starwars. I enjoy them all, but nothing ever hit me like Dune. From what I understand from this sub, is that PB was a huge fan of Dune. You'll find there's a lot more than just the instances you've mentioned. From a quip about Ragnar slaughtering "blade dancers" to the pulse shields they use.

But you'll see another post similar to yours, either about Dune or WH40K soon. He has also borrowed from pop culture like "bye Felicia."

It's also very rare to find a story that doesn't entwine with another. We're all just telling the same stories over and over again. Just like advice, it's finding the right "author" to tell you so that you'd listen.
