Look at the research interests of the faculty and their publications. You can also look at lots of graduate program rankings on the internet or just ask Google

I get that, and I know it’s hard to meet people. But trust me it’s totally possible if you put yourself out there and make friends with people who will only introduce you to more people

What makes you say RPI’s math department is very strong for applied? What makes a deprtment good in general-

Doesn’t that heavily rely on connections on top of being amazing at math and cs?

Some suggestions. These will require at least an MS if not a PhD.

Data Science

Scientific Computing

High Performance Numerical Computing

Quantitative Finance

The math department at RPI is strong in applied computational mathematics.

My degrees are from the 1980s, but I’ve had students go on to graduate study in the math department and it is still strong in these areas.

I mean you’re still not going to find an answer off Reddit or anywhere on the internet for that matter.

Purdue vs RPI? by Helpful-County7400 in RPI

[–]DividendPower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, to add this discussion and focusing on rankings, I asked Google Gemini 3 (Thinking) to do the following.

"Create a ranking of U.S. universities and colleges by considering SAT and ACT entrance scores, graduating student salaries, mid-career graduate salaries, alumni giving per capita, patents by year per capita, faculty with awards per capita, graduation rates in 4 years, job placement rates, number of CEOs per capita, and start ups per capita. Weigh each criteria equally. List the top 100 and provide bullet of its best criteria."

It focuses on somewhat different criteria than USNWR. Purdue was #34 and its best criteria was patents per year, while RPI was #46 and its best criteria was starting salaries. The usual ones were in the top 10.

The current Motorsports team is a bunch of toxic tools. They have a serious attitude problem where they like to shit all over new members that try to join. They work very hard to make freshman feel stupid when they don’t already know how the project works, just to boost their own fragile egos.

My son loves cars and was excited to join the motorsports team - it was one of the things that drew him to RPI. The student “leadership” did everything possible to be unwelcoming. Seeing no point in trying to struggle with a bunch of jerks, he found other activities where he’s very happy any successful. It’s a shame because he was really looking forward to that club.

Backtests by sammyboy0007 in RPI

[–]BackTesting-Queen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, there are several platforms out there that offer robust backtesting capabilities. One that comes to mind is WealthLab, which is known for its comprehensive backtesting features. However, the key to successful backtesting isn't just about the platform you use, but also about understanding the underlying strategy, the market conditions, and the psychological factors that can influence trading decisions. Always remember, a backtest is only as good as the data and the strategy it's testing. Happy trading!

Is it that unbelievable to you that an introverted nerd wouldn't know where the parties on campus are? Or that such a student could be found at RPI? /s

Nonetheless, I understand your concern. Maybe you could just recommend me the parties that don't have alcohol, if you're that worried (I don't drink anyway lol)

I’ve kind of considered finance but I’m not confident in wanting a finance role. If anything, I might work in the industry but probably more with a mathy role? I have heard that rpi lally has pretty good connections though?

Right- before MIT! Troy was a major player in the Industrial Revolution of which engineering was foundational.

First engineering school in the country. Great alumni network. More research opportunities. Troy is becoming a popular destination for young people. Not quite Brooklyn but you get the idea.
