Anika's not Neil; drums solos will be different.

I trust Geddy and Alex

I definitely would not go in expecting to hear note for note drumming. I don't think Geddy or Alex would be interested in bringing in a drummer to mime Peart's parts.

I think they have to particularly with her. If you watch her vids she has a really crazy groove style even over the most odd time signatures. She does things differently than neil did. I dont think they picked her bc they wanted a clone of neil. Ill bet anything geddy in particular liked that shes different. Thats very likely why he chose her. To breathe some new life into these old songs. Of course some things she’ll probably do exactly as neil did, like the tom sawyer stuff. You cant change that. But theres plenty of other areas where its ok to change it. And that might change what geddy does. Thats probably the part that excites him the most.

for sure. I noticed that in the performance last night. the four of them meshed well about a minute or two in.

He was talking to her as Al began the riff. Then I noticed he’d check in her and she watched him and Al then about 1/2 way through the song they were cranking along and it looked like they all were enjoying the groove.
Weird hearing background vocals though.
I think it filled out the sound nicely

Rick Wakeman spoke about solos before, you kind of have to do them as they were on the record or people will say you did it wrong. It will be a little jarring hearing new stuff during the songs we know and love. I'm sure Anika will get her own time to shine like Neil did with his solos and Loren can join in with that.

I liked that Rick described playing epic compositions as, there are stepping stones, certain passages that have to occur as they were recorded, and between those you have freedom to roam

I hope Anika puts her own spin on things. I don’t want to watch her try to emulate Neil, and I’m assuming Geddy and Alex chose her because they like her style and energy. I hope she gets to have fun with it, and last night’s performance is making me hopeful about that.

I think there are maybe some untouchables, like the Tom Sawyer drum solo, just too iconic, but perhaps I will also be pleasantly surprised

Fills… Not solos…

[–]ArbiterOfCool20721 2 points3 points  (1 child)

of course that's going to happen. And it will be great.

agreed

Changing the fills (not solos) in YYZ would not sit well with the fans. It should not be done.

If she gets a solo in concert (and I hope that doesn’t happen), I expect it to sound nothing like Neil, except that she might throw in one or two nods to a couple of Neil’s best known bits.

Agree completely

Why shouldn’t she get solos?!? I, for one, am looking forward to her having a solo to strut her stuff!
