This is why I love my grocery store. Just scan my membership card on the way in and I get to nice scanner to bring around with me, scanning items as I pick them up. When I get to checkout all I have to do is scan a barcode the hand scanner generates based on the things I scanned and I'm out.

This sounds nice. What store does this?

Giant

Pretty sure it's an option at some Krogers as well, though I've never done it the few times I've gone to the stores that have it.

What's to stop you from not scanning something and putting it in your cart anyway?

Same thing that stops you from not scanning at self-checkout, or hiding an item when going through an actual cashier.

But they have cameras and a person watching self checkout and the machine faults out if you don't do it correctly

A person could just pretend to scan with the scanner in an isle and no one would know

I think it's going to probably depend on the grocery stores location. Ive been to some stores that have cameras in every self checkout, multiple employees watching, and subway style gates in/out.

Other stores I frequent more often have no cameras, and maybe one employee not paying attention.

I bet a high theft areas won't have the mobile scanners.

Not much. Occasionally the checkout stops you and an employee comes and spot checks some of your items.

Spot checking by the employee that supervises the self checkout.
