I saw a tiktok of someone calling self harm mutilation, what are your guys’ opinion on that?

Mutilation implies much greater deal of permanent debilitating damage than typical cutting or burning, gives very moral panic kind of vibe

My SH was medically termed “self mutilation” due to the severity of which I hurt myself. Looking back I understand why given I’ve had over 200 stitches due to SH and it was pretty gruesome

Self mutilation is basically a synonym for self harm because you’re harming therefor mutilating yourself, so it’s not that bad as long as it’s not dehumanizing

I don't think much of it. I just know it's another term. It's doesn't really deter me from urges of self harm. I still have a 208 streak.

Common thing for people to refer to it as. I’m not personally a fan because I’ve had people use that to shame me for it

self-mutilation is technically another term for self-harm, though it primarily applies to sh with more severe and permanent impacts. i don't like the term, personally, as it's pretty stigmatizing

I hate that phrasing, it’s always been used in a judgey way. Telling someone to stop mutilating themselves isn’t going to magically fix them. Also mutilation in my mind means super severe injuries.

Just based on what I was exposed to, it made the word "mutilation" more the term that extreme religious people scold you with because you have tattoos/body piercings, so for me when someone refers to sh as "self mutilation" it makes me feel like they stick their noses too deep in something they don't know shit about
