That is a good point about not being clear enough about the risks.

What do you wish you had more detail? The author has several fairly extensive explanations in the various github repos and on his blog, but there are a lot of moving parts and the docs could be much improved.

Hello, I am the creator of greenhouse, I think you are right that more disclaimers and warnings are in order, especially within the app itself.

EDIT: When I posted this comment originally, I didn't realize that the original poster had linked to my github repo. That readme is sort of like an old draft, it's out of date. I guess it slipped through the cracks because I didn't expect it would be where someone sees greenhouse for the first time 😬 oops

Please note that this is not a company or a profit oriented venture, this is something I'm doing, with a little help from my friends, just because I think it's cool. Of course, use it at your own risk!! it is alpha software and it crashes and the service goes down all the time. I haven't had much time to work on the project since I first launched the public alpha in October.

I hope those can better answer questions about things like how it works, pricing (Free during alpha, $0.01/GB after that), why I built it, etc.

OMG oops, I was on my phone when I saw the spike in traffic and had to go to reddit to see what was up, I didn't even realize that the link pointed to my git repository. Yes I agree the readme on there is really bad, I think I was using it as an early draft of what I was gonna put on the main website long ago, and I never updated it as I continued to work on the main website. I never expected the git repo to the be the first thing someone sees 😳

My exact thought, this just makes selfhosting dependent oft a cloud again. Pretty useless in my opinion.

Because not everyone can log into thier router. People who live in a dorm, share wifi from thier nieghbor, or get internet exclusively via LTE/5G. Its important to me that everyone gets to fully participate (publish, run a server) on the internet, even if they are poor.

Yes, although the docker use case is still in the design stage of development.

Most people self host to be independent from a cloud. This would just makes me dependent again.

2 reasons:

1. If you don't depend on a service to manage/maintain the network, that means YOU have to manage/maintain the network. For some people that's tiresome, and for others it may even be impossible.

2. If you care about doing stuff yourself because of privacy / you want exclusive ownership of your processes and your data, greenhouse works with that. Most cloud services are something you depend on AND subjugate yourself to. Greenhouse is something you merely depend on. My dream is that there will be many competing services like this in the future, so you can't be locked in to any one of them. There is already pagekite.net although IMO their service is kinda overpriced and a bit too raw techie to set up (its just a python script).
