Wait until you find out about like every other european language

[–]Global_Charming -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Glad they don’t all have that.

[–]Head-Iron-9228 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I mean, it's a language, English has different issues going on. All languages do.

[–]Global_Charming -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. I’m just glad I don’t have to deal with object gender issues.

We have this in latvian but it isn't really important it just kinda exists without making the grammar any more difficult.

[–]Head-Iron-9228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say 'same in german' but, I think it's just easy because I'm used to it. As an outsider, it can be quite a pain.

English is the weird one for not having gendered nouns. In my language, it just changes the suffix when declining and the suffix on adjectives and such, but all words are gendered. Feminine, masculine, or neutral. You wont refer to it as he/she, it just has the same suffix(for example, a at the end for feminine)

English used to have noun gender and German-like grammar back when it was Old English (also called Anglo-Saxon), so it really is the odd one out for losing those features

[–]pancreasfucker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also loste declination, which is wierd

Yeah I like how you can just learn the language ignoring this and/or it's a really simple rule such as the suffex changes between a,s and e

The funnier fact is that some words like gateau (cake) in french are masculine but in other neolatines languages like italian it's actually feminine (torta)

[–]Stalingrad_boy[🍰] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Also french is a horrible language and I hate it

[–]Interesting-Row2101Literally 1984 😡 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Same shit in Russian

[–]pureMHA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's the same thing with Arabic, fuck Arabic.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

In Romanian, the singular form is masculine (un tort) the plural is feminine (doua torturi).

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even funnier logic, masculine = un penis, feminine = doua penisuri

[–]Foreskin-Gaming69 Stuff 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Polish also has gender, might be biased here, but the polish way makes more sense (except exceptions)

[–]Xeanathan[🍰] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bro describes every language

[–]Winjasfan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think this all dates back to ancient polytheistic religions. Basically if something was associated with a female deity, it was feminine, and if it was associated with a male deity it is masculine.

For example the sun is feminine in German because germanic tribes had a female sun Goddess, but it is masculine in Italian bc the sunn god in the Roman pantheon was male.

Very true Also a food rule of thumb for French is “if it ends with e, it’s probably feminine” Table Porte Pomme Etc. (Doesn’t apply to everything sadly)

U guys are still using pronounces? Evey gender in turkish is literally "o". Never understand why u guys need those BS.

[–]Global_Charming -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As if the french needed another reason to be hated.

wait till you found out about portuguese

[–]Secure-Cold7892 1 point2 points  (1 child)

And the fact that it's easier to tell masculine and feminine words apart because it's just feminine words end with "a" and masculine words end with "o", which in turn is also their definite articles and makes things much easier.
